The Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen is owned and operated by the Thornton W. Burgess Society, a non-profit educational organization founded in 1976 to carry on the pioneering conservation work of author/naturalist Thornton Burgess [1874-1965]. Burgess, who was born and grew up in Sandwich, went on to achieve national and international recognition for his children's stories of Peter Rabbit, Reddy Fox, Jimmy Skunk, Grandfather Frog and many other animal characters. His popular stories have taught generations of young people lessons of conservation and a love of wildlife. At its Green Briar Nature Center, the Burgess Society continues his work by providing year-round programs for children, families and adults. Visitors to the nature center enjoy the live animal exhibits, the changing gallery exhibits, the unique gift shop, the award-wining wildflower garden and the walking trails. The historic Jam Kitchen is a "living Museum," where visitors may observe the cooking process first-hand. Jam making workshops are also offered for the public on specific days with advance registration required. Under an agreement with the Massachusetts Division of Fishers and Wildlife, the Burgess Society manages the 133 acre East Sandwich Game Farm Property located off Route 6A. This beautiful and diverse area is used recreationally by the public for hiking, fishing, canoeing and kayaking. The Burgess Society also used this property for many of its environmental education programs for children during the summer months. Membership in the Society is open to all. Care for the Cape & Islands
PO Box 638
Yarmouth Port, MA 02675
Phone:
(508) 760-8187
CARE for the Cape & Islands™ was founded in 2012 as the Cape and Islands’ first travelers’ philanthropy initiative. More commonly known today as Impact Travel, CARE seeks to encourage, support, and create opportunities for visitors and residents to donate their “time, talent, and treasure” to help preserve and protect our region’s exquisite natural beauty, plant and wildlife habitats, Cape & Islands culture and history. What is CARE’s Mission CARE for the Cape & Islands™ mission is to inspire stewardship to preserve and protect the natural environment, cultural and historical treasures of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Why Cape Cod and the Islands? Cape Cod and the Islands’ scenic beauty and pristine coastline are enjoyed and appreciated by millions of visitors each year, presenting a need to protect its unique qualities. This program will help sustain the region’s fragile ecosystem, culture and heritage that draw visitors and residents to vacation, work and live. Ultimately, CARE for the Cape & Islands™ seeks to tap travelers’ growing interest in and support of eco-tourism and green-travel, and their philanthropic inclinations to help ensure the long-term sustainability of the Cape & Islands as a national treasure and travel destination. How does it work? CARE for the Cape & Islands educates and facilitates relationships among travelers, businesses, local organizations, environmental initiatives, and residents. Working with travel industry businesses, CARE creates opportunities for travelers to contribute to local efforts to promote long-term environmental conservation and cultural heritage preservation. Visit our project criteria page to learn about our funding themes and proposal guidelines. Download our CARE Profile.
