Miyawaki Forest Taking Root
Survey work began recently on River Run Way to determine the perimeter for the new “tiny forest” that will be planted this spring/summer. The next step is relocating some existing trees from the site to the new Redbrook Square commercial area.
A Miyawaki Forest features biodiverse, native, dense plantings that lead to cooling, increased biodiversity, and carbon sequestration, among other benefits. The forests are typically installed in urban areas, with at least eight already growing or planned in Massachusetts, ranging from 1,100 square feet to 4,300 square feet.
The 300-tree forest planted at Redbrook will be the first Miyawaki Forest in the southeastern part of Massachusetts. The A.D. Makepeace Company’s Read Custom Soils division is using the pilot project to test proprietary engineered soils to determine what blends best help the forest to thrive.
The plant material for this area has been ordered and will be arriving soon. We invite the public to watch as the tiny forest grows, or even volunteer to assist with plantings and plant care. Email Jeni for information.
