Didi Theva, MD, Southcoast Health urologist and pelvic floor reconstructive surgeon, explains that women often put their own health issues and daily discomforts, including pelvic floor disorders, on the sideline. The pelvic floor supports a woman’s uterus, bladder and bowel. Pelvic organ disorders will affect 40 percent of women in their lifetime. Many women avoid their pelvic health needs for various reasons, and the issues that arise from conditions of the pelvic floor can result in serious dysfunction of basic activities of daily living such as toileting. “When a woman suffers from pelvic floor conditions such as prolapse or bowel or bladder incontinence, it often causes her to feel embarrassment and shame. These women then shy away from the world, preventing them from leaving their homes and staying active,” says Dr. Theva. “This ultimately leads to the downstream effects of declining cardiovascular, mental and social health.” Dr. Theva wants women to feel empowered to seek help to live their healthiest, happiest life. This month we celebrate the strength, resilience and wellbeing of women everywhere! For women’s health resources please visit: https://lnkd.in/e7sXtVV9

“My parents emigrated from Korea to the US in the early 80s – at a time when the Korean economy was seeing rapid economic shifts. Having graduated pharmacy school in Boston in 2015, working at Southcoast has been an experience that I never could have imagined after growing up in New Jersey as a first-generation Asian American.” – David Chang, Pharmacist and Epic Clinical Analyst During Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, we are proud to spotlight and celebrate our AAPI colleagues, recognizing their unique journeys and contributions to our diverse community. Soon after welcoming her daughter, Alisa Allison, a Registered Nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital started looking for children’s book that would help explain her role as a night shift nurse and why she wasn’t always home for bedtime. “I couldn’t find anything out there, and I wanted my daughter to understand why I wasn’t home with her,” Alisa said. “That’s when this idea came to me!” After months of searching and no luck, Alisa took matters into her own hands and began writing the very book she had been looking for. Mom is a Night Shift Nurse, tells an imaginative story of a mother’s night as a nurse caring for a dragon with an upset tummy, a princess whose heart flutters, and even a pirate with a new peg leg that needs bandages. It highlights the important work these nurses do while everyone is fast asleep. But, like any other children’s book, it needed illustrations. Turning to her team, Alisa asked Anita Machado, a night-shift Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and a mom of four to help her finish this important task. “I had seen Anita’s drawings around our nurses’ station and knew she’d be the perfect person to help bring this story to life.” The two put their extraordinary talents together to produce the well-received children’s book, which now gives other night shift nursing moms something to share with their own children. “When Alisa approached me about doing the illustrations, I was excited! I had only drawn as a hobby and it’s something I’ve always loved to do,” Anita said. “Alisa started something great, and together, we brought it to where it is now. I am thankful that she encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and pursue this hobby.” Alisa and Anita are already working on their second book, “ABC’s in the Hospital.” Please join us in wishing Alisa, Anita and all moms a Happy Mother’s Day! Mom is a Night Shift Nurse can now be found on Amazon in paperback and Kindle editions and will soon be in Southcoast Health gift shops.
